Learn Colloquial Portuguese: Pendurar as Chuteiras - Expressions from Soccer # 3–> Neymar’s official chuteiras in 2014

The literall translation from Portuguese to English is: to hang your soccer shoes. What it means is: to retire your shoes from use.

In colloquial Portuguese, pendurar as chuteiras = to retire.

The verb to retire in Portuguese is aposentar-se, which is a reflexive verb.

Below are three examples using both the colloquial expression pendurar a chuteira and the verb aposentar-se.

1)

Gustavo: Esta é minha última semana de trabalho. Finalmente vou pendurar as chuteiras. (Or: Finalmente vou me aposentar.)

Translation:

Gustavo: This is my last week of work. I’m finally going to retire.

2)

Carla: Hoje é a festa de despedida do meu chefe. Ele está pendurando a chuteira. (Or: Ele está se aposentando.)

Translation:

Carla: Today is my boss’ farewell party. He is retiring.

3)

Silvana: Quando os seus pais penduraram as chuteiras? (Or:  Quando os seus pais se aposentaram?)

Fernanda: Há uns 3 anos.

Translation:

Silvana: When did your parents retire?

Fernanda: About 3 years ago.
