How Brazilians Actually Answer Questions – with Video

posted on December 31, 2009

Say you like chocolate. How would you answer if your friend asked:

  • “Você gosta de chocolate?” (Do you like chocolate?)

How to Give Affirmative Answers:

Well, in Brazil most of the times we give affirmative answers using the verb conjugated in the appropriate tense. For the question above, I would say:

  • Gosto. (I like)

Notice that I would not say “Sim” (yes).

This is not the only way to answer questions, but it is very common in informal conversations.

Let’s practice! Check out the examples below:

ANA: Pedro, você fala Português? (Pedro, do you speak Portuguese?)

PEDRO: Falo.

CLARA: Você tem muitos amigos brasileiros? (Do you have many Brazilian friends?)

DIOGO: Tenho.

CARLA: Você gosta de café? (Do you like coffee?)

LUCIANO: Gosto.

TÂNIA: Você está com fome? (Are you hungry?)

CHICO: Estou.

CRIS: Você foi ao cinema ontem? (Did you go to the movies yesterday?)

GUGA: Fui.

CRIS: Tinha muita gente? (Were there many people?)

GUGA: Tinha.

ZÉ: Você viajou nas suas férias? (Did you travel on your vacation?)

ROSA: Viajei.

ZÉ: Ricardo foi com você? (Did Ricardo go with you?)

ROSA: Foi.

ZÉ: Vocês gostaram da viagem? (Did you guys like the trip?)

ROSA: Gostamos muito!

How to Give Negative Answers:

ANA: Pedro, você fala Português? (Pedro, do you speak Portuguese?)

PEDRO: Falo não.

CARLA: Você gosta de café? (Do you like coffee?)

LU: Gosto não; gosto de chá.

TÂNIA: Você está com fome? (Are you hungry?)

CHICO: Estou não.

CRIS: Você foi ao cinema ontem? (Did you go to the movies yesterday?)

GUGA: Fui não.

ZÉ: Você viajou nas suas férias? (Did you travel on your vacation?)

ROSA: Viajei não.

I have a new friend that just moved here from Brazil and she works for an international moving company.  I don’t know the name of it, but they have asked her to put together some web videos, much like these to help teach porteguese to expats that are going to relocate to Brazil.  I sent her this link for her to see how you guys are doing this and she loved it.  She is using some of the techniques that are working here.
