Your Weekly Word # 6: Verbo Pegar and Street Smart Expressions (with VIDEO)

Your word this week is the verb Pegar.

Pegar means to grab or to touch, depending on the context. It can also mean to get.

Examples:

  • Eu vou pegar uma caneta para anotar o seu telefone. (I am going to grab a pen to write down your phone number)
  • Eu vou pegar uma cadeira para você. (I am going to get a chair for you)
  • Este lugar está muito sujo. Não quero pegar em nada. (This place is too dirty. I don’t want to touch anything)
The verb pegar is used in many expressions. I believe you will enjoy learning the following phases:

Literal Translation

Example

Pegar chuva

To get rain

Está chovendo. Vou ficar em casa porque não quero pegar chuva.

(It is raining. I am going to stay home because I do not want to get wet)

Pegar sol

To get sun

Que dia lindo! Vamos à praia. Quero pegar sol hoje.

(What a beautiful day! Let’s go to the beach. I want to be in the sun today).

Pegar um bronzeado

To get a tan

Os brasileiros adoram pegar um bronzeado.

(Brazilians love to get a tan)

Pegar carona

To get a ride

Posso pegar uma carona com voce?

(Can I get a ride with you?)

Pegar gripe

To catch a cold

Estou com dor de cabeça. Acho que peguei uma gripe.

(I have a headache. I think I caught a cold)

    É preciso sair cedo para não pegar a estrada à noite.
    What does “pegar” mean is this phrase?
