Portuguese Life: Part Two

In Part 1 of Portuguese Life, I spoke of a variety of differences between Brazilian and Continental Portuguese. Despite the fact that I’m about to reach the two-month mark, I still have yet to get accustomed to the accent here. While walking in a park yesterday I realized that one of the main difficulties is that in Europe one hears many languages spoken in the major cities, and Lisbon is no different. When I’m out and about and I hear other people speaking another language (other than English, which in itself is rare), it takes about 10 seconds or more for my ears to realize it’s actually Portuguese. In those initial 10 seconds, it might as well be anything from Russian to French.

Street Smart Brazil has the pleasure to interview Alex Martins, a native Brazilian who has lived in San Francisco since 1993, surfs with a passion, practices yoga daily, and works for himself as the local surfboard ding repair man (www.AlexMartinsSF.com). He’s well known for charging huge waves at Mavericks, the renowned surf break in Half Moon Bay (Calif.), as well as ripping on a shortboard out front of his house on the Great Highway at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach.

Samba Class – An Interview with Neguinha Sambista from Aquarela Dance Group

Aquarela Samba Class

It is Carnival and to celebrate it with our readers I visited Neguinha Sambista, a professional Samba instructor from Aquarela Samba Troup, in Berkely, CA. We interviewed her about the history and styles of the dance, and she told us about her classes. We also filmed parts of the lesson for you! Aquarela teaches Samba and provides Samba shows around the SF Bay Area. We filmed Neguinha Sambista at the Dance Mission Theatre in San Francisco.
