How to Say: It is a Matter of…

posted on July 25, 2012

In the picture above, João is saying:

“Falar português não é difícil. É uma questão de prática.”
= Speaking Portuguese is not difficult. It is a matter of practice.

This is very useful construction that we use a lot both in English and in Portuguese: It is a matter of…

  • It is a matter of choice. = É uma questão de escolha.
  • It is a matter of habit. = É uma questão de hábito.
  • It is a matter of honor. = É uma questão de honra.
  • It is a matter of life and death. = É uma questão de vida ou morte.
  • It is a matter of luck. = É uma questão de sorte.
  • It is a matter of opinion. = É uma questão de opinião.
  • It is a matter of price. = É uma questão de preço.
  • It is a matter of principles. = É uma questão de princípios.
  • It is a matter of style. = É uma questão de estilo.
  • It is a matter of time. = É uma questão de tempo.

Please notice: When in English you have the gerund, in Portuguese you have the infinitive:

  • It is a matter of making a good decision. = É uma questão de tomar uma boa decisão.
  • It is a matter of increasing the involvement of clients. = É uma questão de aumentar o envolvimento dos clientes.
  • It is a matter of being determined. = É uma questão de ser determinado.
  • It is a matter of being fair. = É uma questão de ser justo.

Watch our video lesson on more uses and examples of the infinitive in Portuguese when you use the gerund in English: Infinitive as the Subject: Easy to Learn and Useful to Know
