I would like to share with you three fantasctic learning tools by Professor Orlando Kelm from the University of Texas at Austin. These resources are sure to take your Portuguese many steps further. All the videos are available free.
Practice with Native Speakers
Professor Kelm has an amazing collection of videos that show native Portuguese speakers from different parts of Brazil and Portugal talking about various topics. Topics are conveniently organized by level of proficiency and range from survival skills such as asking and giving directions, asking and telling the time, and talking about yourself, to conversations about health and entertainment, hypothetical situations, role playing, and much more.
Each video is accompanied by the text transcription and you can even download all the PDF files. This truly is a fantastic collection of videos available for free at the University of Texas’ website.
When you get to the page, look for the horizontal gray bar at the top. This is your video menu organized by proficiency level.
The videos are not scripted or rehearsed. This is Portuguese at its most natural form. Use these videos to develop your listening comprehension skills, learn new vocabulary, practice your grammar, and get exposed to different Portuguese accents.
Cultural Case Studies
Brazilians Working with Americans is a collection of cultural case studies. Each case presents a cross-cultural business challenge and is followed by commentaries from both American and Brazilian executives, as well as discussion questions. I highly recommend the book. We cannot generalize behaviors, but we also cannot deny that there are cultural values that can be found at one degree or another across each nation. Read the cases with an open mind and keep in perspective that the executives who comment on the cases also have their cultural, family, and personal values guiding their interpretation of each situation.
Conversa Brasileira is another wonderful collection of videos by Professor Orlando Kelm. In these videos, you will see Brazilians having conversations as they go about their everyday lives. Enjoy these casual conversations as people walk their dogs, go shopping, talk about their hobbies or favorite food, and more.
Have fun learning with these great resources! Let us know how you like them and how you are using them. Please leave a comment on our Facebook.
