Espirituoso and Vivaz: Good Words to Describe Your Friends

Espirituoso and Vivaz: Good Words to Describe Your Friends

posted on November 15, 2012

This word came up in a class yesterday. Obrigada, Dr. Robert 🙂

  • Espirituoso/a = witty, amusing, humorous

Synonyms in Portuguese are: engraçado, divertido.

Espirituoso is someone who always comes up with quick and inventive remarks. My brother Ricardo is very espirituoso. I wish you could meet him. He always has something funny and unexpected to say in difficult situations.

Another good word for your repertoire is:

  • Vivaz = spirited, lively, energetic

Notice that “spirited” is not the same as “espirituoso”.

Learning tip:

Associate these new words with images. It will help your brain memorize the words without effort. For example: Picture a friend, family member, or fictitious character who is espirituoso and create a funny and/or meaningful flashcard with that person and the word espirituoso. Or simply keep that picture in your mind, but make it lively, meaningful. This image will help you remember the word when you need it.
