Açaí na Tigela – The Real Thing – with Video

posted on December 24, 2009

Açaí is getting very popular in the US today, as it is hailed for its richness in antioxidants. However, it is usually sold only in the form of a liquid juice, often mixed with blueberry juice. While this is delicious, it is very different from how we enjoy it in Brazil. There, we go to barracas (beach hut) and have it served up in an ice-cold puree with bananas, granola, and honey.  It is made with a blender, but you don’t drink it–it is eaten with a spoon. Acai na tigela (acai in the bowl) is a must-have when you visit Brazil.  Watch how it is made in our video below.

Here is a recipe for açaí na tigela:

  • 350 g de polpa de açaí = 12.3 ounces of açaí pulp
  • gelo (opcional) = ice (optional)
  • 1 ou 2 bananas = 1 or 2 bananas
  • granola a gosto = granola to your liking
  • 1 xícara (60 ml) de xarope de guaraná = 1 cup (2 oz) of guaraná syrup

Blend everything until you get a thick puree. You will see in the video that our server helps it with a wooden spoon because he has frozen pulp and ice in the blender.

Serve with sliced banana, granola and honey on top, or be creative and add your own fruit. You are in for a treat!

We like one called Sambazone. You can find it at WholeFoods and at Costco. It is pretty good.

A lot of the grocery stores around here, are starting to carry acai in the form of a frozen puree. Check the frozen foods section at your local market.
