Mangue Beat - Great Alternative Music Movement from Recife
Mangue Beat is a musical and cultural movement that started in Recife in the early 90's. Many great artists came out of that movement, among them the unforgettable Chico Science.
Chico Science & Nação Zumbi rocked my world with their amazing mix of local rhythms and modern music. The Mangue Beat movement is nothing less than a great adventure into the history and culture of Recife, a study of its social and economic aspects, and a dive into the rich folklore of Northeastern Brazil.
Unfortunately, Chico died too early in a car accident. Nação Zumbi continued their work and is still active in the Brazilian music scene.
Me and my friends are crazy for their band...music will always be my first love. This site is a good feast for all music lovers.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Mangue Beat!
Chico Ciência (like Ariano Suassuna called him!) was amazing... but I also have followed Nação Zumbi (the group name name nowadays) , and I still love their work. It's dense, powerful, fun, and has an universal appeal that makes their fans all around the world go crazy at their performances!
I am very proud to say they are from my native state, and that I saw them 2 blocks from my house when they first participated in the "Abril pro Rock", a local rock festival that takes place every year in April in Recife.
So I could say proudly.... I am a MANGUE GIRL!
If you want to learn more about them, and the Mangue Beat movement in Pernambuco, explore the webiste called Memorial Chico Science. It was put in the air by the City in honor to him, but it covers the whole movement, with discography of them plus other groups... very interesting. http://www.recife.pe.gov.br/chicoscience/index.php
you can also check the "Manifesto Caranguejos com Cérebros (Crabs with Brains) that defined the Movement. You can read in Portuguese: http://www.ndesignpe.org/manguebit
Thanks for the post Luciana!
