Brazilian Music Film Series at YBCA This Week in SF - Not to Miss!
In November, we wrote about the exhibition "When Lives Become Form: Contemporary Brazilian Art, 1960's to Present” at the Yerba Buena Center of the Arts. We went and had a great time. Now John Shepherd, the film curator there, has written us about a very interesting event that is happening this week.
"I wanted to let you know about something I hope you’ll be interested in. Beginning next Thursday night (Jan 14), we’re presenting a four-part Brazilian music on film series. You can see the whole schedule here:

The most important film in the series, though, is the first one – SWEET BARBARIANS (aka OS DOCES BARBAROS). It’s a genuinely amazing concert film from 1977, which documents the making of the classic album THE SWEET BARBARIANS. This “super group,” as perhaps you know, featured Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania and Gal Costa. It’s a super-rare film, certainly not available on dvd. And the director is coming in person from Rio to present it. The music is awesome, and the costumes, etc, are hilariously dated….a kind of strange post-hippy/pre-disco feel. It’s wonderful. There’s a good clip here:"
Also playing are
Thu, Jan 14: SWEET BARBARIANS (OS DOCES BÁRBAROS)
Sat, Jan 16: BEYOND IPANEMA : BRAZILIAN WAVES IN GLOBAL MUSIC
Sat, Jan 23: FAVELA ON BLAST
Sun, Jan 24: DISCOVERY OF BRAZIL (DESCOBRIMENTO do BRASIL)
If you are a fan of the Tropicalia movement and/or Bossa Nova and MPB, then this is definitely worth a trip to see. Let us know in the comments how it goes!
