Cashew -- A Lot More Than Just Nuts

Everybody knows about cashew nuts. What most people don't know is that the nuts are just a small part of a fruit called CAJU, typical from the Northeast of Brazil.

The picture above shows two cajus and you can see the cashew nuts (castanha) on the left edge of the fruit. In Brazil, we eat the fruit and make juices, smoothies, and candied fruit.

When travelling through the Brazilian roads you will notice vendors on the shoulder roasting cashew nuts over an open flame (picture below). Those cashew nuts are hand-picked from the tree. It is uma delícia, unlike any cashew you have ever tried!

UMA DELÍCIA, INDEED! The juice is really delicious, but eating the ripe fruit is an epicurean experience in itself. Caju has a smooth skin and its aroma awakens your taste buds as you bite into its luscious pulp and sweet juices. You can see it's one of my favorite fruits. Anyone who's going to Brazil should explore the enormous variety of local fruits. Don't miss caju! Try it for yourself, give it to a friend and ask: "E aí, gostou?"

I'm glad you enjoyed it :) Caju really has a different taste. I suggest trying the candied fruit, too.One of my students read the blog and was surprised to learn that we eat the fruit. He has been to Brazil some 15 times and has never tried. I'm glad I decided to post info about caju :)

Yum. I tried a caju juice when I visited Brazil, and it was delicious. It's very hard to describe what it tastes like, as I can't think of a similar tasting fruit. Definitely a must-try if you are there.
